Gallery 9 is pleased to present an exhibition of recent lithographs and encaustic paintings by American artist Andrzej Zielinski.

The body of work presented in 'Output Devices' further represents Zielinski’s continuing fascination with everyday electronic devices, especially the most ubiquitous office machines: printers, scanners and shredders. Preferring to work from memory instead of life, each of his mechanical subjects are re-imagined with joyful optimism at odds with today’s accepted pessimistic outlook regarding the impact of the digital age. In his own commentary discussing how a bland and overlooked machine has gone feral Zielinski expressed:

“ My machines fight back to assert an individual identity while they keep their head above water in a sea of anonymity.”

In response to the predictable and automated functions of his subjects Zielinski has purposely chosen the relatively unpredictable, highly sensitive and ancient medium of encaustic paint. His use of the old communication of painting and printmaking uncannily up-date modern communicative devices to a new realm of consideration.

Andrzej Zielinski was born in 1976 in Kansas City, Missouri and currently resides between Berlin and Los Angeles. He holds a BFA from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA from Yale University. He has been in numerous curated shows across the USA including Greater New York at PS1 MOMA and shows extensively in Tokyo, New York, Kansas City, Los Angeles and Berlin. In 2012 the artist worked as a visiting lecturer at The Australian National University School of Art, during which he was awarded the 2012 Megalo Printmaking International Residency. The three lithographs presented in Output Devices were completed at the Megalo Print Studio under the supervision of renowned Australian master printer John Loane.
