Idiens’s practice is based on reduction and simplification in the production of painted sculptural forms. Borrowing from traditional sculptural practices and contemporary design, her forms are sketched and scaled, then coloured with conscientious regard for their potential to evoke emotional responses. Along with colour, Idiens’ forms are constructed with the essence of playful enquiry and with an intention to insight subjective curiosity from the viewer as well. When a composition is resolved the methodical process of their shaping and resinous finishing is then undergone but while the use of industrial materials reinforces a minimalist aesthetic it does not detract from the emotional, intuitive human responses sought after. The works presented in 'Counterpoint' are wall-mounted objects known to the artist as ‘panels’.

Following from an exhibition, Precursor held by Idiens at SNO (Sydney Non-Objective, Marrickville) in August, Counterpoint is a recently completed series based on sketches drawn in March 2010. For this series, Idiens has temporarily departed her restrictive palate of opaque, bold colours and embraced a joyfully upbeat range of bright pastels. These colours include: hot pink, warm red, orange, yellow, pale green and baby blue. Each work combines two individually coloured panels with asymmetrical proportion, and this balance tension effects a harmony which completes the composition. Remarking on the works’ glazed finishes in Idiens’s own words:

“The high gloss polyurethane pursues an all but elusive ‘perfect’ finish and disguises [my] hand in the making of the pieces... The surface reflection acts an interface, giving resonance and luminosity to the colours while they mirror their surroundings, making the observer aware of their own presence. This sense of audience awareness is integral to the work.”

Born in the UK, Idiens grew up in Southern Germany before she attended university in England, studying, art and industrial design as well as postgraduate studies in furniture design at the Royal College of Art. Since emigrating from London to Sydney in 2006 Idiens has exhibited in Berlin, Sydney and London as well as the Melbourne Art Fair and Art Stages (fair), Singapore. Idiens is a member of the SNO Contemporary Art Projects collective and has been collected by Artbank as well as private collectors in Australia, the UK and Hong Kong.
