Sally is a marvel. Her photographs are raw, tender and brutally original. Sally is an artist who has a pure vision Jane Campion. Gallery 9 is pleased to present the first exhibition of photography by Sally Bongers. An award winning film director and cinematographer, Bongers has been pursuing her own artistic practice in still photography while directing films with her production company in Sydney. Bongers’s photographs seek to capture the world through often overlooked details.

Bongers explains:

“I photograph the ordinary, the stuff that is not the main bit, the corners, the floors, the gaps, the in- between. The unnoticed calls out to be seen ... the awkward relationship between the people-created and natural worlds. For me, this world is seamless. There is a connection between all things. A oneness.”

Sally Bongers’ short film Fear of Life was shown at festivals worldwide and her collaboration with Jane Campion on the acclaimed short film Peel won the Palme D’Or at the 1986 Cannes Film Festival. She has won two AFI Awards for Cinematography. In 1988, Sally became the first woman to shoot a 35mm feature film in Australia, Jane Campion’s award-winning surrealist suburban black comedy, Sweetie, nominated for the AFI Award for Cinematography.

Sally Bongers multi-screened video installation circa was nominated for an AFI Award for Best Original Concept and the work screened in a permanent gallery at the National Museum of Australia in Canberra from 2001 to 2007. Sally Bongers is also an author, her book Everyday Enlightenment was published in the UK in 2008 and has been translated into French and Dutch.
