Gallery 9 presents a group show for July, featuring a short film by Sarah CrowEST, a new DVD by Silvana and Gabriella Mangano, and paintings and sculpture by Rebecca Pearson.
Sarah crowEST is a multidisciplinary artist, working primarily in the areas of sculpture and video installation. CrowEST graduated from the South Australian School of Art with a BVA (honours 1st class) in 2004 and an MVA (studio research) in 2007. Her work has been exhibited in state contemporary art galleries including The National Gallery of Victoria, PICA, Art Gallery of South Australia, Canberra Contemporary Art Space, (agglomeration, 2007), 24HR Art, Darwin (Getting Away with It, 2006), the Experimental Art Foundation in Adelaide (Get Rid of Yourself NOW! 2005) and the Contemporary Art Centre of South Australia (love and dissimulation, 2003 and mentor/mentored3, 2007). In 2007 crowEST was awarded the Samstag International Visual Arts Scholarship. She is currently living in Lisbon, Portugual undertaking the Independent Study Program at the Maumaus Escola de Artes Visuais.
Sarah’s humorous yet darkly tinged film, ‘Looped’, explores the impulse towards repetitive acts through a focus on a handful of individuals. One person's comforting routine is another's compulsion to ritualise. This work was a finalist in the 2008 Tropfest Film Festival, winning the best screen-play award.
Silvana and Gabriella Mangano, are both graduates of the Victorian Collage of the Arts, Silvana in 2003 and Gabriella in 2001. Their work has been exhibited in Victoria since 2001 and is held in several major collections (Ergas and Monash University Museum as well as private collections in Italy and Australia).
‘if…so…then’ was featured in the Ergas Collection on show at Gallery 9 in January 08. ‘Absence of Evidence’ is the latest DVD from these twin sisters. After the drawing frenzy of the previous work, this new DVD is a more hypnotic affair featuring a deep bass rumble.
Rebecca Pearson graduated from the National Art School (with honours) in 2007, after studying Stage Design in ’87 at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts. Rebecca has spent the new century immersed in paining and sculpture, winning several awards (2006 Dymocks Art Competition – 1st prize, 2006 John Olsen Figure Drawing – 2nd prize, Warringah Art Exhibition 2007 – honourable mention, & 2005 - finalist).
Rebecca works with acrylic film, perspex sheets and board to create layered images that at first seem to be a collection of some long forgotten holiday snapshots, but they deliver a more thoughtful punch.
