Gallery 9 is proud to present an exhibition of new work by Simon Blau that explores the nature of painting and abstraction. Titled Damage, the show looks specifically at what happens to a painting when a section of it is removed and what those implications are.
Drawing upon the history of painting, and abstract painting in particular, Simon Blau’s work tackles notions about the art object - the nature of its existence and ideas concerning materiality and immateriality. Paintings are tangible and physical: they have colours, sides and flat surfaces but by removing a section of the work, the overall aspect is altered.
Simon Blau lives and works in Sydney. He has been exhibiting since the 1980s and his work is in numerous private and public collections.
