What is spiritual? Superstition, praying, candles, churches, glowing, higher up places, god, death, the supernatural, ghost trains, saints, places, grottoes, animals spirits, invisibility.
No matter how fantastic spiritual experiences seem, there is a psychological reality to them. It’s a kind of magic to take on another spirit by putting on a mask.
Rendered Unconscious by Spirits humorously explores the various forms spirituality takes including the unconscious, incidental, personal forms that aren’t necessarily religious but are our own and are abstract and unique. These artworks are abstractions of religious iconography with any identifiable symbolism erased, in an attempt to reveal the pure experience of religious superstition, awe and mystery.
The work is trying to articulate a new aesthetic for the dream realm of the unconscious, something more enticing than the drab impersonality of psychiatry, or the clichés of ‘new age’ spirituality.
